After making the decision to start a new blog, two of the most important decisions you have to make are what to choose for your blog’s domain name (i.e., the URL or blog address), and what the blog title will be. Your choice for both of these steps should be guided by:
1. Who your anticipated audience is going to be.
2. What the primary topic covered by your blog is.
In other words, you want to put yourself in the mind of someone getting ready to type a search term or phrase into Google – what would you want them to type in if your goal was to have your blog show up on the first page of search results? This search term or set of terms is known as a keyword or keyword phrase, and these few words are going to be all-important to your ability to get your blog to rank highly in the search engines. That being said, there are a few things to keep in mind:
1. You want your keywords to be specific, but you must also remember that there can be a lot of competition for highly sought after keywords. For example, a blog with “cars” as the target keyword would probably have a hard time making it to the top of Google since you would be competing with the likes of Toyota, Ford, and every car dealership in the country for Google search results (and these companies have huge advertising budgets that a new blogger simply cannot match). Thus, you need to be realistic in choosing your target keywords – “cars” won’t work, but something more targeted and specific like “cars in (insert your town here)” might have a shot at rising high in the search results.
2. Although having reasonable, targeted keywords is important, you also want to make sure that people are actually searching for them. If you choose something so targeted that only a few people a year ever type it into Google, it won’t do you much good.
3. If you need help deciding on an appropriate set of keywords to use in your domain or blog title, there are tools out there that can help. My personal favorite is the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. If you go to this site and enter a keyword phrase, the tool will spit out a long list of related keywords along with information on advertiser competition and monthly search volume (i.e., how many times that term/phrase was searched for in a given month).
For example, I write a blog on running, and typing “running” into the Google AdWords keyword tool reveals that the competition bar is maxed out. Furthermore, “running” was searched for over 13.5 million times in May 2009. In other words, a new blogger has no shot at ranking for the term “running.” However, typing in the phrase “running marathons” shows that this is a phrase for which you might have a chance to rank. It pays to do some research using tools like this, and though I’m still new enough at this myself as to not have a recommendation about how high to shoot, if you be realistic and do some research on how to properly optimize your site, you can be very successful in your targeted niche.
So to summarize, when you decide to start a blog, choose a topic and think about what your audience would type into Google to get there. Target specific keywords, but try not to choose keywords that are in excessively high demand – it’s a balancing act, but one that you will figure out with time. Once you decide on a set of keywords, try to incorporate these into both the blog domain name and title. With a little research and effort, you can have good success at ranking in search engines if you follow these tips.

Great tips, Smart Ho! The keyword suggestion is probably the most useful, imo. Having keywords on your pages help, but it’s valuable to have keywords in your actual domain name as well.
good tips
it’s important to have keywords on domain name

I agree to a point, almost all of mine have at least one also. It’s just that people make it seem like the end-all-be-all of domain name purchasing, and it’s far from it.

Great tips, but I have one important thing to add: fill in the keywords you are targetting in Google Trends to check if they will still be important in the coming time.

i think godaddy is excellant for doamain names 50% go through with it and also you have many options there , thanks for giving chance to site owners…
my opinion is that godaddy is the best at domain names and hosting. when you purchase a domain name you can get free hosting. the only drawback to that is the godaddy banner on top of all your web pages. still free.
This is getting a bit more subjective, bulletproof vest but I much prefer the VEST Marketplace.
rencently, i`am using google adword external for keyword research. But, now i`am moved to google.com/sktool for my keyword research purpose..
and i think, estimated traffic from google.com/sktool is better accurate than google adwords external..
how do you think?

Good article.
Everything should be keyword targeted this days. Gone are the days when you just need to build a page and it the content will show nicely on top SERP position. The competition is simply too fierce. Building content should be only 10% of your effort. Prepare your resources for the 90%, which is link building.

I have just recently started buying domains using the technique and I’m not sure if there are any SEO benefits yet. I would like to think so, and the Google keyword tool is a great way of find uncompetitive niches that have a bit of traffic. I will post another comment when I have decided if has worked for me or not.

This post is very nice and useful for SEO i never heard and lacking before to use search keywords to choose a blog domain and title. this is one of the best articles. Peter Larson did a great job
I’ve had great success in the past using this tip…It takes so much less SEO work on your part to rank for a keyword if it’s in your domain.
The only problem is it’s tough in some markets to get a domain that isn’t already taken!
Most general domain names are already taken but there are opportunities for people who are targeting people that speaks other languages than english – IDN – Internationalized Domain Names
This article is spot on accurate information for anyone trying to get a blog for a specific keyword or keyword phrase ranked well in the search engines. Excellent informattion obviously from someone who’s fought the good fight.
As an addendum to this article I would like to add what has worked for me as well…After choosen my main “Keyword Rich” domain I also choose like 5 -7 LSI (Lantent Symantex Indexing)Keywords to also incorporate on my blog(s). I use those keywords preferrably heavily searched for as well for making additional posts and categories.
Quite honestly if your on page SEO is worked out and optimized correctly, Google will throw you major bones and start listing your site for keywords you never even thought of. It’s a serious win in your SEO efforts.
Thanks again for this seriously informative article and please by all means keep it up.
Steve
Great, the keyword suggestion is useful. Having keywords on your page helps, but it is important to have keywords in your domain name.

You must choose the domain name wisely cause there is no way to change it later.
Awesome information and totally applicable for starting a blog off on the right foot. Another way I get my blogs to the first pages quickly in the search engines is I use that same main “keyword” which is now my domain name too and I put it in the title (first words) of the title.
Usually you get 60 characters in the title, 140-160 characters in the meta description.
I use my main keyword in the title as described above and then in the meta description I use my keyword once between the 1-90 characters and once to twice more between 91-160 characters.
Then I use it again when filling out my meta tags plus a few more related keywords.
This has been a recipe for success for my sites so I wanted to share it here on this amazingly informative site.
ps. one thing to remeber is that even the spaces between words are considered characters so be creative when using your keywords and all the best!
Mark

No one should use that tool that way, for way too general terms! Great tips though.
